about

This is the longest time I've spent on a single album, technically. It technically started my freshmen year of high school, around the beginning of 2018. I hadn't released any music yet but really wanted to and I never could quite get an entire album of music together. There were multiple ambient albums I tried making but I could never quite get anything that I liked. So I started working on a more rock-leaning record, but I really didn't own any instruments, so I just used Garageband midi. Thus this album began being recorded.

I worked on it for about three months and finished with an album that was around six tracks long and about forty-ish minutes in length. But on repeated listens to the recorded material, I didn't think any of the compositions particularly stood out and I gave up on the project.

My sophomore year in high school I returned to this project. It's still 2018 and I still hadn't released any music and hadn't made any albums that I felt confident in. I tried branching out in different electronic genres but nothing really came to fruition. I decided to go back to this project but start from scratch. I went back into working on songs and I finished with three tracks. Those three make up what are now the first three songs on this album. The compositions weren't exactly what appears on this album, but the bones were there. I had three tracks that I was happy with but I couldn't quite get anything else out so I put the project on hold once again.

Halfway through my junior year of high school, I had four albums ready to release throughout 2020. Those were Sleep, Paralysis, Post, and another album that never got released called Achilles. Achilles was a more groove-centered album with very few fully ambient tracks throughout its tracklist, but as the year went on I decided against releasing it as most of the songs felt hockey and life-less. Most of the tracks were created in a two-week span in Nicaragua while I was visiting my brothers for New Years'. My brother helped write one of the songs and played the acoustic guitar for that same track. As I gave up on Achilles I found the first three songs for my "rock album" and I transferred some of my favorite songs off of Achilles to this album right here. Those songs are "Ascent", "Brotherhood Blues", and "He Rose From the Cracks".

During the summer before my senior year, in the midst of the pandemic, I wanted to try to release this album but with live instrumentation rather than the MIDI I used to record. I called some friends who I knew could help me bring that vision to life and in the process I was trying to make one last song to help bridge the tracks "Brotherhood Blues" and "He Rose From the Cracks", another project I was working on fell through but a few of those tracks managed to land on some records, "Human" landed on my Settlers Creek EP, "Am I LIke You Now?" managed to get on Post, and "Año" was repurposed to fit this album.

I never managed to get the live instrumental recordings and I once again gave up on this album. About a month ago, I found this album again, and despite the rather flat MIDI, I really enjoyed the compositions and I thought they were some of my best. So I asked some of my friends and they said that I should release it. So I made some minor adjustments, such as adding the slow airy fade at the end of the album and making the recordings themself beefier to create a thicker and less flat sound from the GarageBand MIDI instruments. I'm happy with the outcome of this album, and I'm glad that after what has essentially been four years of work, this album is seeing the light of day. Would I make some changes? Of course I would, I still think the sound is flat at some points, but I did my best with the little I have. Maybe one day I'll come back and re-record the whole thing, but for now, I'm happy with this. If you read this whole thing, thank you. And if you decide to listen to this record. I hope you enjoy the record crafted throughout my high school years.

The "about this album" covers how this album was made. It's pretty much just me, but my brother Carlos Mendieta played acoustic guitar and helped compose "Brotherhood Blues".
